June 27, 2024Almost all U.S. cities and municipalities (93%) anticipate they will need to be ready for driverless or autonomous vehicles on their roads within five years, according to a new study by Verra Mobility.
On behalf of Verra Mobility, Wakefield Research, surveyed 100 technology leaders from cities across the country to understand how they're addressing major transportation technology trends such as autonomous, connected, electric and shared (ACES) vehicles.
Here's a quick look at just some of the surprising findings:
- 52% of municipal CIOs and deputy CIOs want to use AI to identify their road safety priorities.
- 43% say their jurisdiction has deprioritized EV infrastructure support since consumer demand has not kept up with expectations.
- 84% of cities believe the influx of shared vehicles, such as e-scooters and ride shares, has complicated their tech-focused mobility efforts.
- 73% face data analysis barriers preventing them from leveraging data to implement or improve their safety and mobility initiatives.
According to CEO David Roberts, "This study confirms that cities are balancing many challenges during this exciting transition period in the transportation industry, and technology is at the heart of the solution."
